Clinical Observation of the Efficacy and Skin Adverse Reactions of a Home-use Portable Intense Pulsed Light Handheld Hair Removal Device

Abstract: Objective: To determine whether there are any adverse reactions of the skin to the use of the home-use portable intensive pulsed light (IPL) handheld device (SmoothSkin Pure Adapt by Cyden Limited) and to provide actual data for the clinical promotion and reasonable application of home-use hair removal devices, etc. A total of 80 people volunteered to use this device, and they were taken from the dermatology department of our hospital from May to December 2025. All the people have obtained hair removal services using the SmoothSkin Pure Adapt home-use portable IPL handheld hair removal device. Treatment areas are the axilla, forearm and lower leg. For 8 weeks, a treatment was given once a week, and then for 3 months, it was monitored. Changes in the density of hair, diameter of hair shafts and hair colour were observed and recorded before and after 8 weeks of treatment, and the effective rate of hair removal was calculated. Observe for any skin adverse reactions during and after the treatment, such as redness, swelling, burning sensation, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, etc., and note the features and recovery time of these reactions. After 8 weeks of treatment, the hair density and hair shaft diameter of all 80 participants were significantly lower than at baseline, and the hair colour was significantly lighter (P < 0.05). The actual proportion of hair reduction was 88.75% (71/80), and among them, 49 people showed significant improvement, 22 showed moderate improvement, and 9 did not. During and after the treatment and follow-up period, 11 people experienced mild skin adverse reactions; the overall incidence rate was 13.75%, and among these, 6 had erythema, 3 experienced a burning sensation, and 2 were slightly swollen. All the reactions were mild, and there were no serious side effects such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation or blistering. All adverse reactions disappeared spontaneously within one to three days and did not need to be treated. In short, the SmoothSkin Pure Adapt home-use portable IPL handheld hair removal device has good hair removal effect, is convenient to operate, has a low incidence and mild severity of skin adverse reactions, recovers quickly, has high clinical safety, and is suitable for promotion in the market of home-use hair removal devices.
