Abstract: As a flagship Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure project, the China-Thailand Railway generates significant economic and political impacts while also transmitting profound socio-cultural changes to regions along its route. Grounded in social exchange and cultural contact theories, this study empirically explores these potential impacts by examining public perceptions in four key node cities: Kunming, Luang Prabang, Nong Khai, and Bangkok. The findings indicate that the railway not only enhances transportation convenience and economic growth but also dramatically facilitates the flow of people, goods, and information. It accelerates modernization among residents, promotes local social optimization and adjustment, and increases the frequency and depth of cross-cultural exchanges.
